Earlier this month, LIFE’s seniors woke up with excitement because for months they had been looking forward to their annual Easter trip. Everyone was to be at Swift Hall by 7:30 to board the bus to leave by 8 sharp to head to Spanish Lookout.

Since some of the seniors did not want to miss the bus, they waited out there starting at 6 a.m. The excitement showed on their faces as they smiled and chatted with each other. Several of the conversations were about not traveling on the road for years, or maybe it was their first time going to Spanish Lookout.

Spanish Lookout is a Mennonite community in the Cayo District. They are known for their agricultural and industrial hub.

After the scenic 2-hour drive to Spanish Lookout, the seniors shopped at the Farmer’s Trading Center, then hopped back on the bus to Western Dairies. There, each enjoyed pizza, a drink, and ice cream. While eating, they got a chance at winning three $25 gift cards for Publics Supermarket sponsored by Fidel Mai.

After relaxing, enjoying the food and dessert, and each other’s company, we all headed back on the bus for home. So many were so thankful for the trip, and they expressed that with hugs and kisses. They are already talking about next year’s trip.

L.I.F.E.- Living Independently in Full Existence- works to improve the quality of life of seniors (age 60 and older) living in the Southside of Belize City. Through the collaborative efforts of community partners, LIFE will focus on measurably improving five dimensions that impact the health and well-being of older persons: social support; food access; minor house renovation; medical care; and transportation.
