Celebrate the Journey: Join the Office of Mission Advancement on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, for Celebrate the Journey. Celebrate the Journey will bring together donors, friends, Associates, Volunteers, and community members to celebrate the wonderful work of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. It will begin at 10:50 a.m. with Mass in St. Vincent de Paul Church, followed by a luncheon at noon and a short presentation. Immediately following the lunch, guests are invited to join Nazareth experiences. More details will be shared closer to the event date.
Sustainabyte: Scientists are closely monitoring a major ocean system known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vast network of currents that includes the Gulf Stream and helps regulate climate across the globe. This system acts like a conveyor belt, moving warm water from the tropics northward and returning cooler water southward, helping to stabilize temperatures, especially in Europe and North America.
Recent research suggests the AMOC may be weakening, raising concern about a potential future collapse. While scientists are still studying how likely and how soon this could occur, the risks are serious. A weakened AMOC could disrupt weather patterns worldwide. Changing rainfall patterns can lead to drought in some regions and flooding in others, affecting farming, water access, and food security for communities our Sisters serve.
The primary driver behind this slowdown is climate change. As polar ice melts, substantial amounts of freshwater enter the ocean, altering salinity and reducing the sinking of cold, dense water, an essential part of the system’s flow. The stability of this ocean current is deeply connected to the balance of Earth’s climate system.
SCN communities already embody care for creation through conservation practices, sustainable land use, and education. Continuing to conserve water, support local food systems, restore natural habitats and advocate for climate justice strengthens resilience. Click here for more information.
Kentucky Gives Day: A box fan makes a big difference. During the hottest days, staying cool is a matter of safety. Extreme heat places older adults and families at risk each summer. Last year, supporters helped the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth distribute 600 fans across Nelson County. This year, the Sisters hope to raise $12,000 on May 12, 2026, for Kentucky Gives Day to provide more fans to those in need. Each fan offers safe, low-cost cooling and includes a prayer card as a sign of care and compassion. Fans will be distributed on June 18, 2026.
Run with a Mission: The Nazareth 5K will take place Saturday, May 16, at 8 a.m. This year’s theme, Peace, Love, and Tie-Dye, will bring a fun, colorful atmosphere for runners and families.
- Sisters who plan to cheer along the route should notify Sister Services by May 1. Signs and pom-poms will be provided.
- Employees are encouraged to participate. Registration is free, and participants will receive a tie-dye shirt. Register online or pick up a form at OMA.
- Volunteers are needed for parking, route support and hydration stations from 7 a.m. to about 9:45 a.m. on May 16. Volunteers will receive a tie-dye shirt. To help, contact Jasmine Huston at jhuston@nazareth.org or (502) 348-1580 with your shirt size and preferred role.
