50 Years of Sainthood: Celebrating St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
This past weekend (Sept. 12–14), the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati joined fellow members of the Sisters of Charity Federation and hundreds of pilgrims at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland, to mark the 50th anniversary of her canonization.
The celebration offered countless ways to honor Elizabeth’s legacy and spirit. Concerts, lectures, guided tours, and a Vincentian Family Mass invited participants into prayer, learning, and fellowship. On Sunday, the Anniversary Mass celebrated by Archbishop William E. Lori overflowed the basilica with gratitude and joy, while music and performances brought energy and excitement throughout the shrine grounds.
Pilgrims also explored exhibits featuring more than 20 American Servants of God, Venerables, and Blesseds—holy men and women whose causes for sainthood are underway. Among them was our own Sister Blandina Segale, Servant of God, whose courageous life of service continues to inspire.
The spirit of the weekend made it clear that Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s legacy—rooted in faith, courage, and love—remains vibrant today, guiding pilgrims, Sisters, and faithful across the nation more than two centuries after her death. Fifty years after her canonization, Elizabeth Ann Seton continues to be “a saint for our times.” In this world of division and uncertainty, her life points us to trusting God, living the sacraments, and serving others with great love.
