The Global School Prize is an initiative of the Varkey Foundation which, starting in 2025, seeks to acknowledge the best institutions worldwide that are reinventing what is possible in education.
According to the organisers, “the Global School Prize is open to all schools, both public and private, that teach students up to the age of 18, in all countries around the world, subject to local laws, and that strive to provide quality education”.
This new award joins two other prestigious annual awards offered by the Varkey Foundation: the Global Teacher Prize and the Global Student Prize. “Together, the three awards will generate a 360-degree conversation about what it takes to provide the best possible education, preparing children to face the future with confidence while rethinking the future of learning for generations to come”, say the organisers.
Awards and categories
The Global School Prize “will identify ten winners in each category”, according to the competition website, who will each receive $50,000 USD. “Of these, one outstanding school will receive the Global Schools Prize and $500,000 USD to expand its impact”.
In addition, “shortlisted schools will receive a Global Schools Prize Badge, symbolising their impact and world-class achievements in areas ranging from AI transformation to teacher development”.
The categories for which schools can apply are:
- AI Transformation
- Arts and Culture
- Character and Values
- Global citizenship
- Health and Wellbeing
- Overcoming adversity
- Inclusive education
- STEM education
- Sustainability
- Teacher development
Another benefit that winners will receive is the opportunity to join the Global Schools Network, “which will give them access to partnerships, professional development, and global collaboration opportunities with other leading institutions”.
