Brother Armin Luistro, Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, has recently appointed Brother Ferdinand Biziyaremye as Coordinator of the Lasallian Delegation of Rwanda for a three-year term, from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2029.
Brother Ferdinand has a distinctly international profile and extensive experience in the leadership of the Lasallian educational mission in Africa. He has served for many years within the Lasallian Region of Africa-Madagascar (RELAF) and was Director of the Regional Community of Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), a key center for the formation and animation of the Region.
At the international level, he served as a member of the International Council for Association and the Lasallian Educational Mission (CIAMEL) until 2023. He was also a member of the preparatory commission for the III AIMEL (International Assembly for the Lasallian Educational Mission), helping to shape the Institute’s global strategic directions regarding service to the poor, vocation culture, and governance. This work culminated in the publication of the Final Report of the III AIMEL in July 2023. He also served as Regional Coordinator within the Secretariat for Association and the Lasallian Educational Mission at the continental level.
The appointment of Brother Ferdinand as Coordinator of the Rwanda Delegation continues the work carried out by his predecessor, Brother Jean Bosco Bigirimana. It responds to the need to promote and strengthen collaboration “together and by association” among the Brothers and the many lay partners (teachers, educators, and families), while further developing the Rwandan structures in accordance with the Institute’s educational and spiritual standards.
Educational Works
The Lasallian presence in Rwanda dates back to 1953, when the first Brothers arrived from Belgium (although the Delegation itself was not officially established until 1972). Today, it is part of the RELAF Region. It includes approximately 40 Brothers actively serving in the country, supported by more than 150 collaborators and lay partners.
The Rwanda Delegation also oversees six communities and several works that serve more than 2,700 beneficiaries (children and young people). Among its educational works are:
- La Salle Academy (Byumba): One of the most established Lasallian institutions in the northern part of the country, focused on educational excellence and formation.
- The La Salle Center for street children in Butare, which provides non-formal education programs and stands as an excellent example of “free educational service to the poor”.
The New Frontier: Kigali
In linea con l’invito del Capitolo Generale ad andare verso le “nuove frontiere” della povertà educativa e urbana, la Delegazione ha recentemente espanso la sua presenza istituendo una nuova comunità e la Kigali De La Salle School nella capitale (settembre 2022). L’opera (che accoglie sezioni di scuola materna ed elementare) è nata proprio per rispondere alla forte domanda educativa delle famiglie della zona, integrando perfettamente la collaborazione tra Fratelli e personale laico.
A proposito dell’inaugurazione di questa struttura Fr. Ferdinand ha fortemente evidenziato l’importanza della collaborazione tra i religiosi, le autorità ecclesiastiche locali e i partner laici. Ha descritto la presenza lasalliana come una “comunità ospitale dove la fraternità è al cuore di tutte le attività”, sottolineando che ogni traguardo scolastico o pastorale è il frutto di un cammino fatto “insieme e per associazione”.
Fr. Ferdinand inoltre è da sempre attento ai talenti dei giovani. Infatti ha più volte ribadito l’idea lasalliana che ogni bambino e ogni studente rappresenti un dono prezioso per la società.
Per Fratel Ferdinand, il compito principale dei coordinatori e degli educatori in Ruanda deve essere quello di “mettere anima e corpo per far fiorire e crescere i talenti nascosti in ogni ragazzo”. Già in passato, commentando le attività della Delegazione del Ruanda durante periodi complessi (come la gestione dell’istruzione e del supporto sociale durante l’emergenza legata al Covid-19), aveva lodato la capacità delle istituzioni locali di non lasciare indietro nessuno, in particolare i bambini di strada e le fasce più vulnerabili della popolazione.
