Completing her three-year term as a member of the BVM Communications Advisory Committee, Emma McCarthy will continue to assist with her “younger” voice, planning issues of Salt magazine and advising/reacting to social media outreach.
Following graduation from Xavier College Prep (XCP) in Phoenix in 2021, Emma completed a B.S in Political Science, a B.S. in Sociology and a Certificate in Sports, Ethics & Cultures at Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe in three years, graduating in May 2024. She managed to keep her GPA at 4.0!
In August 2024, she returned to ASU to pursue an M.A. in Strategic Communication and plans to graduate in December 2025.
Fortunately, Emma is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Scholarship for Women. Since graduate studies typically do not offer the same kinds of grants or scholarships as undergraduate programs, the BVM scholarship will help relieve some of the financial burden she is currently carrying.
As an XCP student, Emma was taught by BVM teachers. As an XCP alum, Emma recognizes and embraces the BVM core value of education. As an undergraduate, she worked for America Reads, which provides after-school tutoring. While there, she worked as a content creator, producing videos that featured activities for students to do at home or for tutors to use with their students.
Currently she interns at the Arizona Board of Regents, the governing board for the three public universities in Arizona. As a multimedia communications intern, Emma creates content and markets for their “College Ready AZ Program.” Targeting middle and high school students, the sessions prepare them for college, teaching them how to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and hosts events to connect students with counselors and mentors.
Emma is an industrious and passionate young woman, a creative and collaborative leader, with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. How fortunate we are to have her on our communications committee and numbered among our scholarship recipients!
