“Be diligent in serving the poor. Love the poor, honor them, my children, as you would honor Christ Himself.”

Sister of Charity Franette Hyc Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

Sister Franette Hyc celebrates 60 years of religious life this year, marking a journey filled with deep compassion, service, and commitment. “My Sisters who I serve today and my clients who I served in the past are a gift to me!” she reflects.Sister Franette began her vocation with the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, she attended two years of high school there before completing her education at a boarding school in St. Louis, Missouri, run by the Franciscan Sisters. In 1965, she entered the congregation and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marillac College in St. Louis.

Over time, Sister Franette felt a growing connection to the spirituality of Elizabeth Seton, founder of the Sisters of Charity, and to Saint Louise de Marillac, co-founder of the Daughters of Charity. This led her to enter the Sisters of Charity in 1989, after receiving her master’s degree in Hospital and Health Care Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1986.Her ministry as a Sister of Charity included significant contributions in the health care field: as a physical rehabilitation and nursing home administrator, in hospice care, and later as principal research assistant/RN at the University of Cincinnati’s Infectious Disease Center and AIDS Clinical Trials Unit.

Today, Sister Franette continues her service in a new role. She is the director/coordinator of Residential Life Services for the Sisters of Charity in independent living at the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse. She also shares her gifts as a board member at St. Joseph Home, an organization founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1873 that supports children and adults with complex medical and physical disabilities.

Looking ahead, Sister Franette shares her vision with conviction: “… [M]y hope is that together we will work to uphold the rights of all individuals, but especially of the marginalized, and that we will individually and collectively risk a caring response.”
