Prayer service : “HEAL THE WORLD: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE”
Opening Prayer
Leader:
Let us praise God for the gift of creation. O God, our loving Creator, we praise You for the beauty of our Earth. For the mountains and valleys, the rivers and oceans, the forests and fields, the birds of the air and all living creatures, we give You thanks. The Earth is Your gift to us. Help us to receive it with gratitude, to protect it with love, and to share its resources justly. Amen.
Introduction
Today we gather with grateful hearts to pray for our common home. God has entrusted this beautiful Earth to our care. Yet our world is wounded by pollution, waste, deforestation, climate change and careless consumption. Our theme today is “Heal the World – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Healing the world begins with healing our own attitudes and choices. Let us ask God to open our eyes to the beauty of creation and our hearts to our responsibility towards it.
Creation itself seems to be groaning. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, changing rainfall patterns, floods, droughts and extreme weather events reminds us that our planet is under increasing pressure. Although no single disaster can be attributed entirely to climate change, global warming is making many natural systems more vulnerable.
NEPAL FLASH FLOOD 26/08/2026
Before
After
The devastating flash floods that struck Nepal recently are a painful reminder that the effects of global warming are no longer distant warnings- they are being experienced by communities today. On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic flood triggered by a glacial collapse swept through parts of Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges and livelihoods, and claiming thousands of lives, with thousands still missing.
Scientists have found that rising temperatures, melting glaciers and thawing permafrost have contributed to the increasing instability of the Himalayan environment. While global warming did not cause this tragedy by itself, it has made the mountain ecosystem more vulnerable to such cascading disasters.
This tragedy calls us to recognize our shared responsibility to “Heal the Earth.” We are invited to reduce pollution, protect forests and water sources, use natural resources responsibly, and work together to safeguard our common home for present and future generations. The suffering of Nepal reminds us that caring for creation is not merely an environmental concern—it is a moral responsibility and an expression of our love for one another. As we remember those who have lost their lives, those who are missing, and the families who have lost their, homes and livelihoods, we are reminded that the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor are deeply connected.

“Heal the World”- Lyrics
Verse 1: A fragile Sphere, suspended bright, a cosmic sky so wide
The air we share a gentle light where life and dreams reside
From mountain peak to ocean floor a tapestry untold
This vibrant Earth we must adore
More precious than all gold.
Chorus: Heal the World our precious Earth for everyone
Give it the love and care it’s worth
And bring back Nature’s Joy
The rivers flow, the forests stand
A gift for us to keep.
Lets join together hand in hand,
while the whole planet sleeps.
Verse 2: We’ve taken much perhaps too long,
Ignoring Nature’s plea.
The planet’s heart is losing song
For all the world to see.
The waste we make, the fumes we send
Are harming every part.
It’s time to make amends and
mend this broken work of art.
[Chorus]
Verse 3: Small steps we take can make a change
If everyone will try
Reduce, reuse, rearrange beneath the open sky
Protect the creatures great and small
Respect the land and sea
Respond with love to nature’s call for all eternity
[Chorus]
Verse 4: So let us strive with hearts so true
To make our planet whole
A healthy Earth for me and you
A haven for the soul
Heal the world, heal the world
lets make a brand new start
Our future story to unfold
Within our loving heart.

Reflection: “The Cry of Our Common Home”
Leader:
Today our Earth is crying.
The mountains cry because their glaciers are melting.
The rivers cry because they are polluted.
The forests cry because trees are being destroyed.
The oceans cry because they are filled with plastic and chemical waste.
The soil cries because it is abused.
Animals cry because their habitats are disappearing.
And the poor often suffer the greatest consequences of environmental destruction.
The cry of the Earth is also the cry of our brothers and sisters.
What is God asking of us? Perhaps the answer begins with three simple words:
A Moment of Silence…….
Leader:
Let us remember the victims of disaster, their families, and all people around the world affected by floods, storms, droughts and other climate-related tragedies. Comfort those who mourn; strengthen those who are suffering; and bless those who are working to rescue, heal and rebuild.
Teach us to understand that the Earth is not merely something we possess, but our common home, entrusted to our care. Give us the courage to change our lifestyles—to reduce, reuse and recycle, to avoid unnecessary waste, to protect forests and water, and to use the gifts of creation responsibly. May our small actions become signs of hope. May our communities become places where care for the poor and care for creation go hand in hand. Lord, make us instruments of healing for our Earth and for one another.
Ask silently:
How am I caring for God’s creation?
Do I waste food, water, electricity or other resources?
Do I buy more than I really need?
What can I change in my daily life?
Let us therefore renew our commitment today:
I will care for our common home.
I will protect and conserve water.
I will respect and protect creation.
I will Reduce, Reuse and Recycle..
I will reduce plastic use.
I will avoid wasting food.
I will switch off unnecessary lights.
I will carry a reusable bag/bottle.
I will plant and care for trees.
I will buy only what I need.
I will stand with those most affected by climate disasters
I will pray and work for a healthier, safer and more compassionate world.

Teach us to REDUCE what we consume, REUSE what we can, and RECYCLE what we no longer need. Give us the courage to live simply, the wisdom to choose responsibly, and the generosity to care for others. May our homes, communities and institutions become places where creation is respected and protected. Make us instruments of healing, peace and hope for our wounded world. May everything we do give glory to You and help make our common home a place of beauty, justice and life. Help us to become faithful stewards of your creation, so that future generations may inherit a world filled with life, beauty and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
