In a new video based on the theme of “Global Justice,” Sister Helan shares the story of Kenneth, a young boy in Kenya whose education was interrupted because his family could not pay school fees.

A second grader at St. Francis of Assisi Academy in Marereni, Kenya, faced challenges when his family could no longer afford school fees. His father, once a fisherman, is now disabled. His mother supports several children and works as a maid when possible. When they could not pay tuition, the children were sent home. The younger two later returned, but the eldest stayed away to fish with his older brothers and help the family earn money.

After several weeks, Sister Vinaya, SCN, who teaches at the school, visited the family and learned about their situation. The mother explained that they lacked the funds for their son’s return. When asked if he wished to continue his studies, he said yes. The Sisters assured the family that the children would not be turned away.

He soon returned to class, completed his exams, and did well. The Sisters provided uniforms, support for school fees, and supplies. He now attends regularly and continues to make progress.

Sister Helan said the child’s situation is common for many children in Marereni. She added that the experience reminded her that education and justice are closely linked and that standing with families in need is an important part of her work.
