As part of its observance of Earth Month in April, the BVM Care for Earth committee hosted a Zoom presentation featuring representatives and youth plaintiffs from Our Children’s Trust (OCT), a Ministry Partner dedicated to advancing climate justice.
Founded on the principle that a safe and stable climate is a fundamental right, OCT works with young people across the United States and around the world to bring legal actions that hold governments accountable for environmental protection.
OCT was connected to the BVM Community in 2016 by Irene Lukefahr, BVM, whose sister Kathy belongs to First Congregational Church in Sonoma, Calif., which was supporting OCT through its Earth Care Committee.
“The relationship between our BVM Community and OCT has been a blessing and a learning experience,” says Irene.
The stories shared were both sobering and hopeful: sobering in their description of environmental destruction already affecting many communities, and hopeful in the determination of young people who are stepping forward to advocate for their rights to a safe climate.
The outcomes of these cases have the potential to change environmental policy for decades. In addition to that, OCT is helping to redefine civic engagement and intergenerational responsibility.
