LIFE (Living Independently in Full Existence) held its annual Mass celebration recently at St. Martin de Porres Church in recognition of the International Day of Older Persons.

Observed Oct. 1, this year’s International Day of Older Persons carried the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.” The occasion offered an opportunity to recognize, celebrate and give thanks for older persons and the many ways they enrich our families, communities and society.

Sister Carlette Gentle opened the celebration by welcoming everyone, especially LIFE’s seniors. Her remarks emphasized the importance of honoring older persons and recognizing their dignity, wisdom and valuable contributions to the community.

Before Mass concluded, the Rev. Chris Collins, a Jesuit priest, invited all seniors present to receive a special blessing. He blessed them and sprinkled them with holy water, offering a prayerful moment for everyone gathered.

LIFE’s seniors and staff enjoyed time together in prayer and fellowship. Following Mass, they gathered for burgers, cupcakes and refreshments.

It was a joyful day of faith, gratitude and community, a reminder that every stage of life is a gift and that older persons hold a valued place in society.

LIFE is grateful for the opportunity to celebrate its seniors and honor longer lives lived with dignity, purpose and community.
