Nepal Republic Day: Nepal Republic Day, celebrated each year on May 28, marks the country’s historic shift to a federal democratic republic following the end of the monarchy in 2008. The day is observed with national ceremonies, cultural programs, and displays of the Nepali flag across the country. It is also a time for citizens to reflect on Nepal’s democratic progress and recommit to building a stronger future for the nation.
Corporate Voice: As you read Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas, you are invited to reflect on how he frames the many topics he addresses through the lens of integral ecology and how the Sustainable Development Goals are reflected throughout the encyclical. Both technological and developmental progress must consider the common good and care for the Earth. Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical is available here.
Sustainabyte: Deforestation is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing our world today. Between 2000 and 2020, the planet lost nearly 100 million hectares of tree cover, largely due to agriculture, logging, and wildfires. The effects of deforestation are far-reaching. Trees help store carbon, filter pollution, and regulate the water cycle. When forests are lost, rainfall often decreases, soil becomes more vulnerable to erosion, and wildlife loses critical habitat. Forests also provide food, medicine, and fuel for communities around the world.
SCNs and SCNAs have already shown leadership through tree-planting efforts, but there are other meaningful ways to help reduce deforestation. One is by eating less beef. Cattle production is the leading cause of agriculture-related deforestation, particularly in Brazil, where forests are often cleared to create grazing land. Another major driver is palm oil production. Palm oil is found in many foods, cosmetics, and household products, often hidden on ingredient labels. Choosing products certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil helps support more sustainable practices.
Every choice we make matters. By planting trees, making mindful food choices, and paying attention to the products we buy, we can help protect forests and care for creation for generations to come.
