Sister Susan Gatz offered the opening prayer during the Memorial Day ceremony at the site of the new Bardstown-Nelson County Veterans Park. Pictured above are Sister Susan Gatz, veteran Kenny Fogle and Sister Brenda Gonzales.
Hundreds gathered to honor those who gave their lives in military service. Veterans, families, community members, and local leaders joined together in prayer and remembrance.
In her prayer, Sister Susan remembered those who died in service to the country, prayed for those wounded in battle and asked for comfort for grieving families.
“… By demanding that no other young men and women follow them to a soldier’s grave, unless the reason is worthy and the cause is just,” she said. “We pray, comfort those who grieve the loss of their loved ones, and let your healing be the hope of their hearts. We pray, hear our prayer for those who currently wear the uniform, grant them your loving protection when they are asked to stand in harm’s way.”
The annual Bardstown, Kentucky, ceremony was hosted by veterans Kenny Fogle and Frank Thompson with support from local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. State Sen. Jimmy Higdon served as keynote speaker.
We remember with gratitude all who gave their lives in service to others.
