Autumn Renewal in Oldenburg

From our life in community we are sent to extend the mission of Jesus through our presence and service. Enlivened by a spirit of justice, reconciliation and peace,  we collaborate with others in responding to the needs of the world. -Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg

Founded by German Catholic immigrants in 1937, the small town of Oldenburg, Indiana, is known as "the village of spires," with its horizon defined by the Gothic Revival style Holy Family Church as well as the motherhouse and chapel of the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg. This is our destination for a pre-Congress retreat hosted by the Oldenburg Franciscans. Our "day away" will include:

  • A reflection on "Spirituality of Presence: Being Christ's Hope and Light" by Sister Olga Wittekind, OSF

  • Time to just "be" in nature and enjoy the fall colors on the Oldenburg Franciscans' campus. The peaceful and serene park-like grounds feature paved paths with benches, leading to several grottos and shrines where you may pause, pray and reflect.
  • Self-guided or guided tours of the convent and chapel will also be available
  • Lunch at The Brau Haus, featuring fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable of the day and cole slaw, served family style. Coffee and tea included.
  • Opportunity to explore downtown Oldenburg

Oldenburg is about an hour's drive from the Congress hotel. The bus will leave at approximately 9 a.m. and return to the hotel around 4 p.m.

Sister Olga Wittekind, OSF, PhD, is director of the Oldenburg Franciscan Retreat Center. She is a Jungian analyst, retreat director, and spiritual director. She loves combining spirituality with psychology.
