A Prayer for Creation with St. Kateri
Written by: Sister Mary Valerie Schneider

O God, we adore You. We thank You, Divine Spirit, for raising up this first Native American Saint whom we recognize as the patroness of care for the environment and ecology. Described as Lily of the Mohawks, she is remembered as pure and clear, “The Beautiful Flower.” Baptized at age 19, she declared, “I am no longer my own. I have given myself entirely to Jesus Christ.”

During her short life of 25 years, she prayed for the conversion of other Native Americans. Saint Kateri, aid us in finding God as you did, hearing the voice of God in the trees and rivers, seeing the face of God in your fellow humans, knowing creation as our common home and shared future. Forgive us the injuries committed against native Americans and others. We pray that no group is ever again, omit from our mission to uphold human dignity and foster fraternity.

Give us the courage to address the real sufferings of the men and women of our time. Let us bring peace through human development. O blessed Kateri, your dying words were “Jesus, I love You.” May those same words be on our lips in our daily eucharistic living promoting peace and justice in light of the gospel. May the words we live each day be signs of unity for all humanity and for every created being until all is fulfilled in Christ. We ask this through Jesus, the Head of all creation, with the Father and Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
