Love Beyond Words: Sister Saleth Mary Finds Meaning in Presence
For Sister Saleth Mary Arockiam, ministry with older adults has become a lesson in the importance of presence, listening, and human connection.
Inspired by the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul and the pioneers who came before her, Sister Saleth felt called to reach out to older people, especially those living alone while their children and other family members are far away.
At first, she admits, visiting people in their homes brought some uncertainty. That changed as she began sitting with them, listening to their stories and learning about their lives.
“I realized how much they longed for someone to talk to,” Sister Saleth said. “They opened their hearts to me, sharing their struggles, loneliness, memories, and experiences of life.”
Those conversations helped Sister Saleth understand that companionship itself can be a meaningful ministry. Over time, the people she visited began to trust her and welcome her as part of their lives.
Some told her, “You are part of our family. Whenever we need someone, you are there for us.”
Sister Saleth said the experience has taught her that making a difference does not always require doing something large. Sometimes it begins by showing up, listening, and giving another person the assurance that they are seen and valued.
“I soon discovered that my presence itself brought them joy and comfort,” she said.
Her visits have also changed her own perspective. Hearing the experiences of older adults, including their struggles and memories, has helped her recognize the blessings in her own life and the importance of making time for people who may feel isolated.
For Sister Saleth, this simple ministry reflects the Vincentian call to recognize dignity in every person.
“When we reach out to those who are lonely and in need, we do not simply offer them our time,” she said. “We become instruments of God’s compassion, bringing a little comfort, dignity and hope into their lives.”
