“Be diligent in serving the poor. Love the poor, honor them, my children, as you would honor Christ Himself.”
St. Louise de Marillac
In the Spirit of Elizabeth: Sisters of Charity Host Service Day
“To speak the joy of my soul at the prospect of being asked to assist the poor, visit the sick, comfort the afflicted, clothe little innocents and teach them to love God!” – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
To continue the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s canonization, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati hosted a Service Day on Sunday, Sept. 7. In the spirit of the Sisters of Charity foundress, the Community invited volunteers from Seton High School, Mount St. Joseph University, DePaul Cristo Rey High School, and Elder High School to join them in service to others. The Sisters partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Cincinnati Chapter for a bed build event in the West parking lot, which resulted in 40 beds being built and 40 additional beds to be built by volunteers and delivered in the months to come.
Additional activities included assembling and donating 300 sandwiches to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and Social Center; making fleece blankets to accompany the beds that will be delivered through SHP; and creating cards of care for the children and families.
The day began with a welcome and prayer from S. Judith Metz, centering everyone in the spirit of service. Throughout Sunday’s events, Elizabeth’s presence was felt among all who gathered. With gratitude, we recognize that by serving together we carry her legacy forward.
