St. Francis of Assisi wrote the Canticle of Creation 800 years ago. Felician Sisters in North America mark their arrival 150 years ago. Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Laura Wolf reflects on Sister Moon and Stars as pictured in a stained glass window at Felician Village, Manitowoc. Wisconsin

Praise be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven You formed them clear and precious and beautiful.

As we continue to reflect on the Canticle of the creatures, we come to understand how St Francis demonstrated his total love of creation in all its complexities.  Francis found Brother Sun to be beautiful and radiant in praising God he also finds Sister Moon and the stars unique in their praise of the Lord. Whereas Brother Sun is bright, full of splendor and activity Francis recognized Sister Moon and stars as clear and precious and beautiful. Their gift of praise was given in the quiet and peace of the night with gentle light and serenity surrounded by the twinkling stars and the soft glow of the Moon, In the beauty of the night he opened his heart to the presence of the Lord – conversed, listened and experienced the mysteries of God’s love.

As we too seek to grow in our relationship with the Lord let us seek Him in quiet, peaceful places that draw the soul to listening and pondering, loving and being loved by the Lord our Creator.

Pax et Bonum!
