Sister Amrita Manjaly shares reflections from her visit to Kallanode, Kerala
Vice President Amrita Manjaly SCN recently visited several SCN communities in Kerala and experienced their ministries and mission firsthand.
The Sisters in Kallanode are engaged in a variety of ministries, including a Day Care Center for senior citizens, outreach to migrant communities and active involvement in parish life. SCNs Anne Philip, Gracy Thombramkudy, Anice Vattukulam and Nisha Chemmanam serve in ministries that respond to local needs.
During her visit, Sister Amrita met the senior citizens who gather daily at the SCN community. The center provides a place where they can pray, share life experiences, develop skills, play games and enjoy companionship while younger family members are at work.
Participants shared how the center has helped them become more active, healthy and engaged. Many spoke about discovering new talents, building friendships and strengthening their sense of community. They enjoy praying together, sharing stories, participating in activities and sharing a simple meal before returning home in the evening.
The Sisters have found the Day Care Center to be a meaningful ministry. Some participants discovered gifts they had not previously recognized. Several enjoy singing and entertaining the group, while others write poetry or participate in games and physical activities such as yoga and exercise. Through their regular gatherings, they have formed strong friendships and support one another.
The impact of the ministry has drawn attention beyond the parish. Recognizing its value, the Diocese of Thamarassery has encouraged other parishes to establish similar centers for senior citizens.
Sister Amrita was also impressed by the vibrant faith life of the parish. Daily Mass at 6 a.m. draws hundreds of adults and children who participate actively in the Eucharist and adoration. The congregation’s prayerful spirit and unified singing reflected a vibrant parish community. She was also inspired by the Small Christian Communities, whose prayer services and faith sharing demonstrated the vitality of parish life.
