World Day of Migrants and Refugees
Home
BACKGROUND:This is the 111h observance of World Day of Migrants and Refugees. The Church has celebrated the Day for Migrants and Refugees since 1914, a few months before the start of the 1st World War. For many years the celebration is unified in the Church, with one theme and on one date – the last Sunday of September, which this year falls on the 28th.The Catholic Church honors this day every year as a way to “to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers.” For this Jubilee Year 2025, it will be celebrated in Rome as part of the Jubilee of Migrants on Oct. 4-5.
The Maryknoll Office of Global Concerns offer three actions to take now to show concern and support for immigrants.
– Sign the Cabrini Pledge to add your name to the Catholic commitment to care for immigrants in the United States, in the spirit of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, patron saint of immigrants.
– Send a Message to Congress. Tell Congress to report on human rights abuses in the six countries accepting immigrants deported from the United States. From our friends at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, “The risk of torture or abuse is high and an alarming concern.”
- Save the Date: Catholic Public Witness for Immigrants, Oct. 22 & Nov. 13. Our Jesuit friends invite Catholics across the United States to join a national day of public witness for our immigrant brothers and sisters. Learn more at this link.
MESSAGE OF POPE LEO XIV for WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEESWhile his predecessor, Pope Francis, chose the theme for the 2025 observance, in July, Pope Leo wrote his own message for the day. You can download it 2025 WrldDayMigrRef Pope Leo
On September 18, Pope Leo XIV received in audience Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Speaking after the private audience, Grandi told Vatican News he was tremendously encouraged – yet not surprised – to be assured that the Pope’s “engagement, advocacy, and the work of the Church in support of refugees and migrants, will remain extremely strong and central in his pontificate.” Click on this link to read the complete information.
