It is time for that vocation lesson plan with your Catholic School or parish Religious Formation Session. Here’s a Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity idea tested in a couple different settings. The basic premise is finding out what the young people already know and building or rebuilding on those concepts. Directions are simple. Hand out paper and pencil/pens. Sounds old school? It is an artistic form that involves human touch. Accept drawings!
Read questions one at a time allowing students to put their responses on paper. (The original list of questions was composed on a road trip. You might want to plan your own creative experience.) Next, encourage an atmosphere of discussion, yet always clarifying misconceptions. Reward the best answers from your audience. Keep in mind your audience and choose a reward that they and you would want to receive!
Here are some questions to start with.
- Name a saint who was a sister. What Community/Congregation did she belong to?
- What is the residence of Sisters called? Why?
- What is the difference between a Sister and a Nun?
- Name one of the Vows a Sister makes. Describe the vow.
- What is a religious congregation? Name two congregations.
- What do you call the prayer of the Church that Sisters pray as a group out loud?
- What do Sisters do for fun?
- Name the first step for a young woman learning to become a Sister? What is she called?
- What do you call the clothes a Sister wears?
- What is the name given to a Sister preparing to make vows?
- What sacrament is a Sister’s vows connected with?
- What are some ways Sisters bring people closer to God?
If you are looking for some other feedback from the students, why not poll their responses on other topics that hinge on the vocations. Holy Rosary New Holstein, St. Anna, St. Anne and St. Peter and Paul, Kiel catechetical leaders asked these additional questions.
- What is meant by Catholic Dating?
- If someone says to you Mass is boring, what is your response?
- Is it important for you to go to Sunday Mass? Why or why not?
- How do I get to know Jesus and stay close to Him?
- How do I pray and is it important to spend time every day in prayer?
- Why is the Eucharist so important?
- What are your thoughts on Confession? Is it important to you?
- What does it mean to love your neighbor in relationship to your fellow students, to your parents, to your teachers and even those in your class that are ‘hard to love’?
