Journey to Justice: A Pilgrimage Rooted in Faith, History and Hope
S. Donna Steffen and Associates Karen Martin and Nancy Bick Clark recently participated in On the Journey to Justice, a powerful racial justice pilgrimage to Charleston, South Carolina, hosted by Bellarmine Chapel’s Dismantling Racism Team.
The pilgrimage began with a moving ecumenical service at Mother Emanuel AMEC, marking 10 years since the tragic shooting, and recommitting hearts to hope, healing, and justice. Over the following days, the group visited historic and sacred sites including St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the International African American Museum, McLeod Plantation, and Sullivan Island—places deeply tied to the legacy of slavery and the ongoing call to racial justice.
With storytelling, prayer, and community, the experience was both a lament and a call to action—rooted in faith, history, and the hope of building the beloved community.
