On Memorial Day — observed the last Monday in May — we pause to remember the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is not simply a long weekend or the start of summer. Memorial Day is a solemn occasion to honor the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for the freedoms we enjoy.

In the Catholic tradition, we pray for the souls of the departed and ask God’s mercy upon them. Let us remember them by caring for their families, supporting our veterans, and working for peace and justice.
