Juneteenth Program — June 19: Reckoning, Inc. Executive Director Dan Gediman will present “How to Use Catholic Church Records to Find Enslaved Ancestors” at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 315 North 2nd Street in Bardstown. A Juneteenth celebration will follow at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church. All are welcome.
The talk is part of the Juneteenth program co-sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and will explore Reckoning’s Enslaved Catholic Church Records Project. Supported by grants from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, the project has digitized more than 5,200 sacramental records, including baptisms, marriages, and burials from 27 antebellum-era Catholic parishes across Kentucky. The records include all parishes in Nelson, Marion, and Washington counties. These records can help families trace two to three generations of enslaved ancestors.
Gediman will highlight stories like that of John Baden, who was enslaved by three Catholic bishops before securing his freedom by joining the U.S. Colored Troops in 1864. He will demonstrate how to search the online records database using a combination of names, locations, and parish data, and provide guidance for connecting church records to post-Emancipation census and vital records.
Join us in honoring the past and continuing the shared work of justice and reconciliation. More information about the project is available at reckoninginc.org
