Pentecost Sunday – Karen Coakley, SNDdeN June 8, 2025 John 7: 37-39 We celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, with joy and soaring winds. Perhaps in this day and age, although the ancient words still speak to us as we ask “to be filled with the Holy Spirit,” we need to question if it might also be appropriate to use a different framework as we speak of the Spirit. “The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world and that which contains all things and understands what is said…” (Wisdom 1:7) The usual representation of the “tongues of fire which parted and came to rest on each one of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues” enabled them to proclaim the Gospel. (Acts 2: 1-4) At this time in history, perhaps the representations of a dove with flames coming forth could, in the spirit of Laudato Si, also be represented by quiet, beautiful gardens with animals grazing and co-existing together, reflecting the current realities of our time.
