A group of seven volunteers, led by Sister Luke Boiarski, traveled to Philadelphia on a recent October morning as part of the SCN Lay Mission Volunteers from Nazareth, Kentucky. They collaborated with the Episcopal community of St. James School, a tuition-free private middle school, and The Welcome Table, which provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the local community.

“The highlight of our days together was most definitely the beautiful people we met as well as the opportunity to enjoy lunch with the children at St. James School,” writes Sister Luke.

This was the first time the ministry hosted a group in Philadelphia, marking the school’s first invitation for volunteer home repairs. The volunteers worked closely with local residents, building relationships beyond just completing tasks. This created a sense of community and cross-cultural learning.

Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by David Kasievich, the founding executive director and Head of School, and Shelby Rowe, who coordinates efforts at The Welcome Table. David is the nephew of Sister Theresa Margaret, who resides in Nazareth, Kentucky.

The team completed six major projects, including yard cleanups, awning repairs, and extensive painting in multiple rooms. St. James School serves students from underprivileged backgrounds, and the group had the opportunity to see the direct impact of their work on both the school and the broader community.

Each morning and evening, the volunteers gathered for prayer, focusing on bringing the Light of Christ to those they encountered. The volunteers’ collective reflection at the end of each day allowed them to process their experiences, deepening their understanding of service and ministry. That light was reflected back to them through every home and every person they met during their days in Philadelphia.
