I recently returned from a trip to Yellowstone National Park. An image that remains with me is of sitting with morning coffee between a murmuring stream and a many-acres meadow boxed in by rocky ridges. As the steam rose from my cup and with sun yet hidden behind the brightening mountains, I sensed the surrounding sacredness.
Knowing so few people ever see that one particular meadow I wonder if the sacred is not in the space itself, but in the allure I felt, the attraction that seemed to speak almost aloud, “Sit with me for a while.” Are we all attracted to some “sacred space” where we experience the divine – within or without, alone or with others, indoors or out? I suspect there are many such moments I miss. How can I pay more attention to these attractions, calling, calling, saying—what?
